despite the distinct lack of hoist/crane/garage/tools, and the northern weather conspiring against us, Matt coles and I have spent the day removing the old block and replacing it with the one he collected from wales yesterday.
Just had it running=, but still bits to do...[frame][/frame]

Just a few points:

what is the reason for the devilishly long pipe from pump to carb? A filter?

Secondly, whilst you have the front off, treat the rust or smear it with grease to keep the rot out.

Jowettjavelin, the long pipe is to go via a ghastly in line fuel filter.

Matt i'd imagine the bores didn't fill with water from the head gasket going, but the head being removed. You have to drain about 2 litres out of the rad (coke bottle is perfect!) and that gets the water level down to just past the top of the block.

Not much use now, but you'll know for the next one!

Think there is a story for the club magazine in there somewhere. Really good to know that folks really will go the extra mile to help a fellow owner.

I don't think that's a filter, it looks like what is on my car.
It may have magnets, Ju Ju beads or snake oil in it, I can't remember, but it wards off evil spirits, makes me more attractive to women and improves MPG too!
I leave it there as a period accessory.

well, this morning was spent in a state of immence tiredness/exhaustion from both of us, and torrential rain. despite this, we perceviered begining the day with an oil change and re-seating the exhaust.
timing's now pretty good too, having had a new king lead and cap due to the arcing which was going on each time we got anywhere near the dizzy! despite the best efforts of wd40, it'll need re-checking when everything's not soaked, but all seems to be reasonably good for now. huge thanks must go to andy (leeds morris minors) who came over to give us a fresh pair of eyes on the subject which hadn't been awake almost solidly for 3 days
the only problem we now have is a weep from the oil filter cannister where it clamps up.
o ring's obv. not seated correctly, but this will need to wait until the rain fines off we think -- currently there is a river of water and oil flowing under the car
all things considered, though, a weekend well spent

I just got home! Well, about 20 minutes ago. I just calculated my mpg from Cardiff to Leeds (via Maesteg to collect the engine) and back to Cardiff again (554 miles). Works out that at a average speed of 60mph my engine was returning 50mpg, happy days!!!

In regards to Steph's engine... as Matt says, there is a leak on the filter casing but it is running really nice now . No pops, no farts a lovely sounding exhaust note

I think I'll get into bed now, I'm shattered!

WOW guys, a Sterling effort all round!! I am amazed at how many people,who dont even have a Moggie, are up for helping out in a Moggie crisis. They really are cars to make you smile!!!
