Used with a disklock together they would not cost the earth. It would be a good visual deterant and stop the opportunist thief.

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the two way switch?

I don't see the sense of a '2 way' switch..... Just one way - ON/OFF will be plenty!

I use a tracking system based on the mobile phone network.
You basically hide a phone in the car and monitor its location on a website.
I've been perfecting it over the years, from using scabby old mobiles with poor battery life, to the current system based on a Nokia 100 handset which lasts 35 days on one charge.
The phone and SIM card, with £10 credit, costs just under £20
The tracking service normally costs £60 per year but my other club (The Cambridge-Oxford Owners Club) gets a canny discount on that.
We do operate an affiliate scheme and I'm sure I can arrange a £20 discount for anyone who's interested.
So, you get the service for just £3.33 per month and for that, you can track up to 5 mobiles (keep and eye on the wife and kids as well ;)

I'd only be interested in tracking the car if it got nicked!
Paying every month seems like an expensive option.

Just to be clear, it's an annual payment but equivalent to £3.33 per month ( 1/2 gallon of petrol )
The Cambridge-Oxford club had a couple of members with cars stolen in the last few months.
One was recovered after we blitzed the membership with email alerts (http://tinyurl.com/suntor) but the other car is still missing.
Personally, I run two classics and the service covers up to 5 phones so is cost effective.

how accurate is the tracking? I've tried a service to locate a lost mobile once, and the accuracy was "within 5 miles" which wasn't all that helpful!

The best coverage is on Vodafone, as they have more cell towers.

So - 5 owners get together and share the tracking cost - then it's just 70p/month each...... Sounds very reasonable if the car is not garaged/used regularly.

i also use a tracker in my minor but it is a purpose built unit which uses a pay as you go sim card which only spends money when you want to know where it is, i can also disable my car by sending a text message to it which will disable either the ignition or the fuel pump dependant on how you wire it. it has a built in battery to keep it going if the main car battery is cut off too.

Just plug a car charger into the hidden phone(left on silent of course) hard wire it to a secluded 12 volt supply under the dash. Last's forever!

With the phone tracking system thing... could you not just pay to start tracking once the car is stolen?

Would save a lot of money! And as already suggested, why not wire it into the battery feed (ignition live) so that the phone gets topped up every time you use the car, but doesn't flatten the car battery if it's not used in a while!

Yes - having the phone wired in would be a benefit, but difficult to hide from someone who knows their way around Minors.
If someone nicks your car it's either joyriders (rare) or someone who wants it for what it is - either whole or as parts.
My theory is you've got 36 hours max before someone with grubby hands starts investigating what they've nicked.
A small phone duct-taped under the parcel shelf or in the spare wheel stands a chance of being overlooked long enough for you to track it.
