Depends on your ears - but I can certainly hear mine 'pink' all too readily. However - it's entirely possible the compression is so poor it will NEVER pink.......

if i stobe the engine to factory settings how much more advanced in general do you think it should go ?? in deg's in surely cant be much of a turn to the right

Stop worrying about the timing - pop the head and fix the problem!

hi , after doing a more accurate compression test with the engine at running temp i get about 135psi across the 4 cylinders . After pouring a small amount of oil down each cylinder this rose dramaticaly to around 165psi . Im goin to remove the head drop the sump knock out the pistons deglaze the bores and re-ring the engine and regrind the valves.This is assuming the bores are in good condition .Question !! can the sump be dropped easily in place without engine removal and in anyones opinion what kind of result do you think i can obtain , hopefully around 160psi and boost the hp
any tips gratefully received

Sounds OK to me, certainly unlikely to cause poor acceleration.
Are you comparing the acceleration to another Minor or a more modern 1 litre car?

If it's not burning lots of oil, I wouldn't worry about the rings.

Seconded, if the rings are knackered it will burn oil on the over run, clouds of blue smoke going down hill off the throttle.

Did you try disconnecting the vacuum advance yet?
Even a brand new one won't work if no vacuum is getting to it.

Also there needs to be oil in the dash pot (under the little black cap on top of the carb) a short squirt of 3 in 1 or a table spoon of engine oil is enough.

actually ive not tried that , will disconnect today and try .think i will connect it to tha old dizzy as well held in my hand just to see it working as well just to prove the pipes not damaged

Got a result at last . Cant believe the brand new dizzy i bought was faulty , the posi drive screw holding one of the contacts to the top plate was way to long and was locking against the base plate underneath it therefor no vacum advance. Wee cars goin well now just the carburation to fix out now. Just goes to show you just because its new goes for nothing

Well done - but be sure to let the dizzy supplier know about the problem!

Hmm, brick on throttle ... I'd never thought of that before, but it makes SO much sense ... ty BMC.

PS: yea, compression test was my first thought too ... also worth checking that you have no blowing around the exhaust joints or sucking on the intake (apart from through the filter) ... after that, I'd go with timing & checking the state of your sparks.
