if you are sure its wired up ok then I would be looking at the regulator inside the alternator,they are available off e bay for about £10 and simple to replace.

just what is connected, if you haven't connected the alternator to the solenoid (or battery), it's only a 2 wire connection? If all you've connected is the warning light to the small terminal then there's a good chance you have damaged the alternator as it must be connected to the battery while runing?

Good grief - so - all along the alternator was NOT connected as per the diagram! It's been running open circuit! I'm surprised you haven't wrecked it. And no - with your electrical skills I suggest you leave the control box exactly where it is...........
