Headline was: "Soviet energy beam can destroy all in it's path". Sounds ominous.

There was a picture of Mrs Thatcher (opposition leader at the time in April 1977) eating with chopsticks in the company of Li Hsien-nien, Vice Premier of China.

Also a warning by Jaques Chirac of France to the Americans regarding the blocking of Concorde landing.....

More interesting to us perhaps a headline of "Garages accused of petrol profiteering" (surely not....) as they were being accused of applying the 5.1/2p Budget rise in petrol duty to old stock and pocketing the increase......Sadly it doesn't tell us what the cost of petrol actually was at that time. Another motoring fact from that year - an advertisment for Leyland Cars states that the Rover 3500 had just won the Car of the Year award for 1977. Have you ever seen one? Were they any good? They don't seem to have survived well......

Slow progress on my Morris but having got the underneath work done, the next step was repairs to all 4 doors which were rusty at the bottom. Repair sections for the bottom skins were purchased from Bull Motif Spares and these have now been welded in. Repair sections for the frames were fabricated by hand where needed.[frame][/frame]

Then, with the welding completed, a layer of body filler was needed to re-shape the area. Dad's plastering skills coming in handy here . Three of the 4 doors also had dents in them so these have also been attended to at the same time.[frame][/frame]

By 1977 the Rover 3500 had sadly morphed into the SD1 version, which was nowhere near as much of a quality product as the P6 it replaced......

A nice, well cared for example....[frame][/frame]

A more common example of SD1 quality and durability, here being 'tested' on Top Gear.... [frame][/frame]

And finally the much nicer and technologically superior (there's irony!) Rover P6 3500 V8 that it replaced.... (I think the P6 looks better too..............)[frame][/frame]
