now that solution i do like, easy to do, no drilling into my beloved manifold and it fixes my leaky filter.

what size would you suggest for the pipe? would you suggest a brass tube?

Just make the hole a tight fit for the breather pipe to push through......

Ahhh.. not through a breather pot with built-in filter.

But yes, better to just suck it all into the manifold where it'll just get burnt up and blown out the exhaust with the other crud.

I suspect that little Ford thing is actually a valve (just like the PCV valve on some Minors) which only opens when the engine is working hard - and closes at idle to maintain a decent idle.

i have a HIF 38 and a 44, but i could never get them to work right

Just wondered, in what way could you not get them to work?
I ask because I had problems with both my Hif carbs. It turned out to be the main jet (in both carbs) was corroded into the brass nut that it is attached to.
They had been sat in someones garage for a few years before I purchased them.
I didn't realise that the jet is meant to slide up or down as you adjust the mixture. Doh!
(The brass nut holds it in a vertical position but not solidly. It's meant to slide in and out of the nut)

Bleedin' obvious really. Up until then, I thought it was some kind of black magic that made them work.

Look at my engine photos on the 1098 twin carbs topic and you will see that it is fitted with a breather control valve on the inlet manifold. I have also explained in ealier postings that it will only work successfully if the rocker box is not vented.

Nope. Just a plastic 'pot' with a lump of wire wool in it, like one of them scale thingys in your kettle. lol. Its a re-invention of the 1275 front cover breather.

how about run a pipe from the rocker cover down to the engine bay floor or to the gearbox , where you position it so that it spews any muck out onto the underside ( where it helps protect the underside)? That's what i did with my tappet chest cover breather as I was fed up with it spewing oil onto my engine and the floor. Rather than faff about drilling holes and the like....

Yes - that should be done, but the rocker cover should be put under suction.......
