Is that an alloy chain or a steel one?

Wow.
Anyhow, I had exactly this same issue on Mog -- MM axle fitted to a 948cc Minor 1000. I swapped it for the correct axle. The curvaceous drums are kinda cool, though, aren't they?

Good to know the earlier cylinders won't fit the later axle. I'd been intending to swap the cylinders in the two axles; instead I'll use some other spares.

Rear axle cylinders are interchangeable, front cylinders are not.

Don't you just LOVE forums like this, you can get facts from people who know the answer and have actually tried these things
Great and thanks again.

Is there no way to modify the original front backplates to take the later cylinders?

I have sourced a later axle, does anyone know for sure that I can fit this in place of my early 53 axle as a more or less bolt on?
I am assuming that I will also need a matching propshaft and handbrake cables at the very least.
Thanks

The axle will fit - not sure about the prop and cables - but hopefully they will be ok.

Thanks again.
As long as the axle fits, that is the important bit.
I am buying new cables anyway. And I will get hold of the "later" propshaft as well and have that rebuilt.
Thanks

Sorry
More questions!
I have found an axle and propshaft.
It is from a 1098, I am sure that the axle will be fine, but will the 1098 propshaft fit my 948 gearbox (it has this on my 53 rather than the original box. )
Cheers
Steve B

The only difference between a 948 prop and a 1098 prop is 1/4" thickness on the diff mounting flange so either prop can be used with any combination of gearbox / axle......
