Yeah I wouldn't put speakers on show on the parcel shelf. Make a frame for the rear footwell, if you use the smaller speakers you'll have loads of room, I've seen it done

MGM (ceased trading but stock now sold through BM) used to do a plastic glovebox liner. This would stop and water getting into the unit. Not listed on the website but I believe they still have some in stock. Give them a ring.

I made a cover out of a large ready meal tray, it just rests on top.
Has the benefit of creating a gutter around the unit but will still allow some air to circulate and keep it cool.

I don't really understand what you mean any chance you could explain further ?

Just make sure your 6x9s can fit in the kidneys before cutting anything. My 5" speakers were a tight enough squeeze!

Where has everyone fitted the ariel ?

I've seen speakers inserted into the lower part of the rear seat (bit covered with carpet ( under rear passenger's calves) Mine are in the kidney section of the scuttle panel. It takes 5" speakers. Wires come down back of bulkhead out of sight and all you have to do is make a circular hole in the scuttle panel. MP3 player in glovebox out of sight. Maplin seem to do all the bits needed.

My aerial is literally resting on the glovebox. I rarely listen to it tbh but its there if I need it!. I just bought a wing mounted one and haven't fitted it (again me+drilling holes = disaster).
YoungCamper - I have attached a picture that should help. I have just made boxes to fit in the footwell as you can see however I have seen a whole frame made like the picture to make it look cleaner and like it should be fitted.

I have an interior car interior windscreen mount aerial. Fits along the bottom of the windscreen and wire goes down the passenger air vent. RMA819 from Autoleads via Amazon £4.90. No drilling of holes. Easy to remove.

How is the crackle? I had to fit suppressed leads but the car didn't like them much, I have to buy a new set. Mine crackled alot when I had the copper ended ones fitted.

I think fitting speakers on the rear shelf is a better bet than in a footwell unless you acctually cut some holes into the rear seat base, how structural is it ?

If you have seen any of the rest of that build thread then you will realise the person doing it is incredibly skilled and has an amazing eye for detail. I think it may well be a lot harder than it looks... Just cutting a round hole for a 5" speaker is a much easier option and will be almost as good.

I will agree with you on that, its probably best to go with 5 inch speakers in the front.

It wasn't on my car, my radio has been mounted under the dash on the drivers side.
I'll try and remember next time I do work on my friends car, but it's a function over form type of thing, a radio with a fast food tray on top!
It does the job and is hidden from view by the glove box lid.

the aerial is mounted from the rhs chassis leg under the bonnet. It receives most but not all stations, but it was easy (always gets marks) and unobtrusive.
