Are you sure that your filler is not on the diff rather than the axle casing? If diffs and axles are swapped you can have two filler plugs or no filler plugs

1/3 full is probably plenty, I wouldn't fill it to 1/2.
Think about it, if there's enough oil for the ring gear to pick it up and splash it around, then there's almost enough as it needs a bit more than that.

Will keeping it half full cause any real problems? It's a major pain (and extremely messy) to drain without having a proper fill plug.

I thought you had found a fill plug on the side of the diff casing? Otherwise -drain completely - and then fill up with the measured amount listed (sorry - dunno what that is - but should be easily found).

No, as you can see from the other thread, no fill plug. The crud fooled me.
Have no idea what the measured amount should be. Both my Morris books don't list capacities.
Any good places to look? Do I have a non-comforming axle that may have a different capacity?

The BMC manual, page General data 6, lists the capacity as 1 1/2 pints (.85 litre)
Being overfilled gives it a propensity to leak at the seals.

So - there you go - drain it and add 3/4 litre to allow for the fact you probably couldn't drain it completely - and it will be fine !

Any idea why my rear axle does not have a standard fill plug?
Might someone have put a later differential in an early axle housing?

Probably the other way round (early diff in late axle) - I have two filler points on my axle!

Not that I plan to be doing this again, but I think if I had originally done this mod, I might have drilled a new fill plug hole to match what I was replacing.

Just getting ready to do a full service on the car for the first time, since purchase and rebuild. Just wondered how the filler plug is removed. Is it a 1/2 inch square drive? so the end of a socket bar will fit? or does it need a special tool? Thought I should ask before I make a mess of it.
It doesn't say in the Haynes manual and the drivers handbook only says square bar, without saying what size.
