Main and dip beam....... Main filament is at the focal point of the reflector, dip is off centre so the beam will be deflected downwards - aided by directional elements in the glass front of the lamp.

might attempt to make some sort of bracket to hold the side light inside the headlamp

oh god!....
so does the side light have to still be positioned where it is now? so i could have a clear lens with an amber bulb and a clear bulb in it....
or just fork out with a set of traficators and be done with it! lol

No - as suggested earlier - you use Mini headlights which have a little window for a sidelamp to shine through. In fact your headlights may already BE that type - look in from the front for a clear window on the upper surface of the reflector.

giving up for now. thought it would be a fairly straight forward job. but don't really want to mess about buying new headlamps and stuff when there are far more urgent things to be getting on with...
perhaps when i have some spare time, money and the cars in better condition!
