The problem seemed to start when I changed the battery!!!

Daisy May, thanks for the note, but you are referring to a dynamo, and this thread is about an alternator, there is no external voltage regulator.

Alan, has there been any other work done recently? Do you have an oil filter head with a switch to indicate a blocked filter, and have you changed the oil filter? Just thinking laterally, that if the speedo has been out, or other wires moved, it's possible that the glowing ignition light is actually a different warning. Unlikely, but plausible. Also, if you disconnect the alternator and then turn on ignition (not starting, just on) is the light still on? All good fun.

So -when you changed the battery - did you do it with the engine running - so the alternator was pushing out volts with no battery to 'sink' in to? Or are you SURE the new battery is connected right way round ?

Hi
The battery was fitted correctly but I'm now sure the alternator is not working. Fitted the battery then turn on the ignition.
Now have a meter to check and will do in the morning so will decide what to do then, in fact have now got 2 meters.
The first one that I've borrowed and the second I bought this morning at Aldi for £2.99 which I thought was good value.
If the alternator is not working I will have to start again, so any information on the correct way to fit it will be helpful.

Maybe just a loose connection - are both wires firmly connected to the alternator?

hi
Yes the connections are good, had the battery at Halfords since Saturday being checked and it's fine.
Just back so going to test with meter?

Check the alternator is putting out the right charge. It may be on it's last legs.

Hi
It' s not working!!No charge being registered on meter
Spoke to supplier and new one being sent out in next day or so.
Could someone have the correct way of installing the new one so no mistakes this time.
By the time the now one gets to me it will be next week before I fit it.
Thank you

Just unbolt the old -and bolt in the new. Consider a new fan belt while in there. Two wires to plug on - one should be large spade and the other small, so can't go wrong. But make SURE the battery is connected up Negative earth.......

I,ve put in a new loom and it has a connector for the alterator plus a single wire for the front so it should be that easy.
So a job for later this week or the beginning of next

Dunno about the 'single wire for the front' - what's that all about ? Are you sure the light you have on is the alternator warning light? Not the 'filter blocked' light ??? What volts did you get with the meter? Should go up from 12 volts or so to ~ 14 volts when you rev up.

Hi
Just received the replacement alternator, which is a lucas A115/45A/14v this time. The instruction say to use just the connection block which has 3 wires and not to use any other conection. The yellow and green wire which I have will not be used, this is odd as it goes to the ignition warning light. The 3 wires in the block of 3 are 2 brown (1 thick & 1 thin) and a brown and yellow. Will I have a warning light or not?

Your green/yellow wire sound like filter blocked wire to me........ I suspect there is/was nothing wrong with your alternator. You don't tell us the voltage readings??

Hi
The reading for the battery was 12.5v,the alternator had no reading at all not even the low output mark of 13.5v.
reved the car to about 2000 revs and still no reading.
The now spare wire is green and yellow the same as the warning light and when I was testing it by pulling it out the ignition light went out.

Possible you have the filter blocked light in the IGN hole in the speedo.......???
You should measure the battery volts with engine off (12.5 is about right) and then again when the engine is revving - should go to 13.8 volts or so. Where were you measuring the volts on the alternator?
When you switch on the Ignition - what lights are glowing ? And then when you start and gently rev the engine - what lights are glowing now?

Are you sure that you have not got your wires crossed? Green/Yellow is the oil filter warning light wire connected to the orange light at 15mph on the speedo, the ignition light is the red light on the right. Are the lights correctly wired up, it is easy to put a warning light in the wrong socket

If you have routed the green/yellow to earth, then the appropriate warning light will stay on, but only with the ignition on. You previously reported that a warning light was on "all the time", even with ignition off. We seem to be covering old ground as between us, we've suggested wrong warning lights and wiring problems. The alternator is very simple: Plug in the single block connector with three spade connectors to the back of the alternator. Period. No other wires. It works. It would be advisable to check the lights in the speedo - perhaps the real ignition bulb has blown and the filter warning light been used instead? You need to check the wiring behind the speedo - disconnect the battery before removing the speedo and then reconnect as required for testing. This is due to the possibility of shorting wires to earth as the speedo is withdrawn.

Iv'e checked the warning lights and the colours in use are:
Blue/White Lights
Yellow/green Ignition
Brown/green Oil pressure
The lights are correct
The oil pressure is corrct
So is the ignition green/yellow?
