No - it's good as more is more - the higher the number the more fuel used / money spent!
Going back nearly 10 years Most fuel economical production car was the 3L Lupo (VW) which gave <3L/100km on diesel.
[something like 2.92 l/100km ~ roughly something over 90mpg]. The economy came from reduced weight, reduced drag, special engine and automated manual transmission. It was only recently beaten, but I can't remember what beat it.
Research projects are targetting 1L/100km, but those cars are still pie in the sky.

automated manual transmission
Alfa Romeo: Selespeed
BMW: can't remember what they called it
Ford: Durashift EST
Mazda: AMT
Toyota: SMT
Vauxhall/Opel: Easitronic
VASG group (VW Audi etc..)
That's less than half of the ones that have been around in the last 10 years - the list has stopped growing, as everyone* transferred theitr efforts into developing Dual clutch versions of automated manuals (effectively 2 AMTs in one gearbox).
In this case Manual gearbox relates to a synchro box with a clutch - an Auto is an epicyclic gearbox with a torque converter.
* not actually everyone - there are some still developing AMT's
