Hello Les,

just looked at the manual and it seems early car's fuel gauge was fed directly, as you say no voltage stabiliser. In that case connect to the fuel gauge feed, which is a green wire, not the sender one which is green\black.

If it has the 'correct' speedo fitted for a 1098 axle (4.22 ratio) then it should be black faced have a tpm of ~ 1408 - and would certainly have had a voltage regulator on the back. It may have been lost of course - but I wouldn't think the fuel gauge (also black faced) wouldn't be accurate without it. An electric temp gauge must be fed from the 10 volt regulated supply. So - if it's not there, you need to get one !

I seem to have the wrong speedo fitted for the axle mine is gold faced with the main beam at the top, oil bottom left and ignition bottom right and bears the number SN4477 1376.

If I were to get the correct one where could I take a live wire for the voltage stabaliser, what other wires are connected to the voltage stabaliser and where do they go ? if not can I still use the fuel guage on my gold faced speedo to feed the volt meter and the B side on the temp guage. Or will I need to feed from somewhere else.

Hello Les,

I was thinking of the voltmeter in my previous answer forgetting that you also want to connect a temperature gauge.
As BMCE said you will need to get a stabiliser for that. You should have a green wire somewhere behind the speedometer, as it presumably is feeding the fuel gauge you have. Just tap into that. If you do change the speedometer then connect the green wire directly to the stabiliser, tap off that connection for the voltmeter and take the output from the stabiliser to the temperature gauge and your new fuel gauge. The only query is if the sender and fuel gauge match, if you have a non stabilised fuel gauge fitted at the moment?

Apart from the live in and the feed to the fuel guage what else is connected to the voltage stabiliser.
I have just been on the charles ware site and a stabiliser is £9.95 So to retain my speedo for the time being I might get a stabiliser and run a wire from the fuel guage then that should allow me to connect both the volt meter and temp guage.
Will that be okay ?

Hello Les,

the stabiliser is only used for the fuel gauge and, if fitted, the temperature gauge. There's no problem in making a connection to the input (As I say it has a double terminal) to supply your voltmeter.

I would hope you could better that price for the voltage stabiliser - CW are never the cheapest option....... I'm sure some have used a stabiliser from Maplins costing MUCH less.

Perhaps not the cheapest but always helpful I have never had a problem with CW. And they are close at hand so a tenner to get the guages in can,t be to bad.

Alec this is the metal plate connecting the two terminals on the back of the temp clock[frame][img]

And this is the back of the volt meter, the blue wire is the earth but I do not know what the other two were used for. Perhaps you could tell me what the plate is for on the temp guage. CW have got some voltage stabilisers on order for this week, bulmotif only sell secondhand untested ones. So I will wait for CW to get some in.

Helo les,

the strip across the two terminals on the temperature gauge looks to be an insulator not a metal plate? A metal plate makes no sense at all.
With the voltmeter it was probably that the feed (two wires) was use to 'daisy chain' power for some other device. You only need the one wire.

The connection with twin cables goes to a fused Ign switched feed = green cable. The red is for a light!

Thanks for your help just waiting for a voltage stabiliser so I can get the guages in.

What is the full SN number on the speedo I want for a 1098 diff and can a second hand voltage stabiliser be tested before fitting it into the car.

Cheers

S/N doesn't really matter - but you want 1408 tpm. Never known a voltage unit to fail!

If I were to fit an alternator to the car to replace the dynamo what parts would I need from the scrapyard and would the electrical connection fitted to the dynamo fit straight into the alternator. What benefits would I gain from using a alternator instead of a dynamo. There is nothing wrong with the dynamo so just pondering and wondering.

Cheers Les

No great advantage on a standard car. You need to modify the wiring to suit. Don't bother if the dynamo is working well! You need the alternator - and the mounting bracket on the block - and a shorter fan belt, but best with a new one.
