The filter is used in many other applications - just use the seal that fits - or as most of us do - don't change the seal!

You were asked earlier if the spring and plate are inside the filter canister - ARE THEY ?? This is MOST important.
yes, i double checked when i took it off.
All fixed now, - i did indeed have the old rubber jammed up inside the grove. this was causing the filter housing to be sitting poorly, thus the ouil poured out of the seal.
i put down sawdust to capture the remaining oil, sand it seems to have worked - i might get some gunk driveway cleaner too - anyone got experience of this on a concrete floor?
all seems okay now, and it's nearly ready to MOT. another hour tonight should have it sorted.
Thanks everyone for your help - it is much appreciated!

does anyone have any experience with oil filter bowls seeping, would an o ring change be needed in this case, or would you try and tighten it up a bit before changing out the o ring seal between bowl and housing?

mine had two rubber o rings. try changing it - if you tighten it, you're at risk of splitting the o ring. you could try tightening it, but proceed with caution!
i've now changed to a spin-on type filter -- much less hassle! :p

Seconded, however the earlier system does work but it needs some care.
It is very possibly for the housing to get "cocked" or caught up on the edge.
You need to guide it past the point when this can happen or no amount of tightening will put it right.

i think i used the fatter in the end - but i had initially put a new one on without removing the old one causing half a gallon of oil loss as above :p

Just compare it to the one you took out, why choose beforehand?
