hi amgrave thanks for reply when you say the back of the case is that when looking at it from the rear of the car as mine is i have tried to upload a photo but with no success, and yes what i think is the filler plug is half way up the the case but to get the oil to just drip out takes almost 3 pints and not the recommended 1.5 pints regards a confused joe

It's possible you might have a different axle fitted as my filler plug is the same hight as the one in your picture but on the drivers side (offside). You still fill until the oil starts to run out the hole though.

If you overfill it will just flood the bearings and likely leak all over the brakes. Are you filling it with the car level - not jacked up at the rear, or off to one side? I would just add the 1.5 pints..

hi bmc yes filling in the garage the floor level I'm just afraid if i only put in 1.5 pints it won't be enough i suppose the simple question is should the casing be filled half way or only a quarter full as 1,5 pints would fill the case a quarter full regards joe

1.5 pints isn't much - should that be 1.5 litres

maybe thats why my oil leaks from the filler plug its to full

No sorry, just found it in an old manual - 1.5 pints. Could have sworn I put more than that in to brim it to the level plug

Don't forget the oil has to get to the ends of the axle case to lubricate the wheel bearings So it has to be at least at the beginning of the axle tubes.

hi all just looked a some pics on the web of morris minor diffs the filler hole in my diff case is at least 2 inches higher then all the ones I've seen on the web and my filler hole is on the opisit side as well no wonder it takes almost 3 pints to drip out i guess the fill hole is to high on the case

It'll soon get there when you go round a corner... The bearings don't want to be flooded.

I certainly would. You sure it tells you to fill till it's running out the filler plug? That's true for the gearbox - but is it for the axle?

I still say you have a non standard axle fitted to your car and because of this you cannot go by the quantity’s stated for a minor axle. All axles I have come across with a filler plug in the place pictured on yours are a combined filler and level hole.

I wondered that - but it looks a very original filler plug mount.
