A 3/4 whitworth box spanner ts the way to go! I've just replaced the indicator stalk, glovebox lining and fitted a new steering wheel as well! It took a few attempts to get the wheel set correctly again afterwards! It maybe worth disconnecting the battery as well save annoying the neighbours with the car horn!

Thanks inverted - the horn thing had occurred to me too. It seems strange that it isn't wired through the coil, but that's classic cars for you.

Looks brilliant but are you sure you have it fitted correctly? Single spoke down?

Only one locating point for the screw that holds the horn-button in place. Any other way up would make the 'M' upside down.

the m is for morris not mercedes

Just so, Charlie, if I had fitted it as Declan has fitted his the M for Morris would have been W (for Wolseley?). I'm not sure how young Dec got his all lined-up like that, but I was guided by the very similar but more beefy chrome-spoked wheel in my 1965 MGB which is asymetrical but has the single spoke down too.

A matter of taste I guess.

It wasn't by choice, it was the only way I could line it up. That's why I was wondering and asked the question. Were the "M" and "W" wheels different in that the threaded hole to fit the hornpush was rotated? The hole on mine is towards the driver.

I'm no expert, Declan, but if that's the way it fits, that's the way it fits. It can't be accidental, so maybe some were made one way round and others made the other way round.

The hole on mine is up and to the right, so probably actually in the same place. It looks like it's the orientation of the 'M' that is different.

But, hey, you like yours and I like mine so I'm not going to lose sleep over which may be theoretically correct. Let's face it, they both look great don't they?

Perhaps it's the way the steering column was fitted/refitted to the car (during restoration/maintenance work)?

Couldn't agree more-it just has me puzzled.

I have another horn button, not in such good condition, it would have the locating thread at the bottom, arranging the wheel like yours.

It's possible that your arrangement is the 'correct' one and that someone has moved the 'M' around a bit on the one I have fitted in order to have the spokes facing the opposite way. After all, it seems logical that the locating screw would be at the bottom out of the way.

I wonder if there is an age criterion for spoke up/spoke down; my 1960 saloon is spoke up, howeve in a copy of the handbook printed in 1963 with the later mini type heater the drawing shows the wheel spoke down..... perhaps that was when things changed for some reason known only to the factory-possibly access to the cubby-hole being improved?

This is getting more and more intriguing. I wonder if there was such a change. I assumed that the Mercedes badge orientation was the original one - it puts the locating-screw right at the bottom of the wheel, which is the most logical place for it.

I wonder if anyone has a definitive answer.......
