well that now primrose is laid up for the winter, i can and will try any theory, so i have a new set of gaskets arriving tomorrow and ill give the carb a general clean, so that "should' fix it

I check for leaks with a spray can of W D 40.With engine running,
spray lightly at manifold gaskets ,carb gaskets,throttle shafts etc.
if engine speeds up you have an air leak.Just make sure not to
spray into carb', :-?

The other random thought that occurred to me whilst travelling back , I recall from somewhere , either here or Mr. Vizards book that the HIF38 & 44 carbs prefer the dashpot piston to be vertical & i believe there is an adaptor available for the inline engine that makes the angle correct . I think the Metro transverse engine is at an angle that makes HIF carb pistons vertical . Might be worth trying .
