Have managed to get a replacement head today. Thanks for the help - will post again if I get stuck fitting it.

Grind in the valves and fit new stem seals before fitting.

His feeling was that the low reading on number 2 was down to a blown/holed exhaust valve.
Well, thought I'd post an update. The new head is fitted and running :D - I've learnt so much since Saturday.

I've just done a compression test and it's now 150,145,145,150 - I think that's good - please don't tell me those numbers are too high.

Going to take him out for a longer run this afternoon, but fingers crossed I'll at least start out for Harewood next week.

The manual says 150 so you are about spot on. If I see you on the hard shoulder I will beep my horn as I pass. Or is that the other way round?

Well done - good compressions. Tighten the head down again and reset the valve gaps again. I recommend 12 thou for the inlets and 15 thou for the exhausts. Your car should be going much better now!

Agreed - All good. But as Roy says remember to retorque the head now its been through a heat cycle or you may be at the side of the motorway with a blown HG :(
