No, it is only the black speedos that use a v/s for the fuel gauge. I used one off the back of a spare speedo and wired it according to the diagram for a Mk1 Mini Delux, the one with the gauges either side of the speedo.
When wired through the v/s I got no reading and without the v/s I got too high a reading, it could be that the v/s is knackered. I have heard that you can get something from Maplins that does the job.

Disagree I'm agraid BM with 'new' gauges, agree re old ones . The new Smiths copies are dreadful. They look great and traditional but are so inaccurate. After sales back up is none existant, unless you have a good friend in sales, and supply direct from the manufacturers is inconsistant, almost feels as if the do not care about their product. Let alone sell them

Best bet are SPA guages. Similar look to Smiths (more modern though) but they come with sensors included ( Smiths additional cost)

Where can you get SPA gauges? If I could get a deg.F gauge that would be even better. Rod is drilling and tapping a hole in my MM head to take the sensor

Just a thought here, does a Minor actually need a temp gauge? I have never had one overheat in 20 years...

Normally the whisp of steam from under the bonnet is a clue as to the temperature. personally I woulld fit one.
Jonathon - thumbs down to 'new' Smiths gauges? What about the outfit that reconditions them?

Spa gauges are available from Demon Tweeks for one. You can PM me for other details.
Bill , yes big thumbs down I'm afraid, Caerbont Automotive instruments are sold and reconditioned by Speedy Cables in Swansea.
Tech staff extremely helpfull but sales is desperate and uninformative. All Gauges now built in China, to a minimum price (it would seem).
SPA gauges are very accurate and offer excellent value for money. Very helpful in both sales and technical, they even lent me a brand new rev counter whilst my one was being built.
Image below is Oil pressure not too dissimilar to Smiths
