success i think!
well it was a couple of simultaneous problems i think
firstly the AA man bent the lever on the float chamber saying that it shouldnt be that bent.....it was supposed to be that bent
secondly the air filter housing had rotated round so that the intake was pressed hard up against the manifold and not enough air was getting in, its all nice and tight now though!i think this was the original problem, just dumb ass me didnt spot it until i took it off to check the piston movement for the 5th time....
well im glad ive got it sorted now *touch wood* its been driving fine all day so im a pretty happy chappy now!

There would still be plenty air getting in - only perhaps slight restriction at full blast. The problem has been caused by the AA. Don't let them near your car again.

So glad you got the problem sorted. But I agree beware of Mr AA ! We have usually received great service from them for our everyday cars and our Minors but not always! I well recall my 1962 Saloon refused to budge in the school car park so called the AA. First thing the chap says as he looked my car over (not even under bonnet at this stage) 'does it have a current MOT?' Shortly followed by the helpful comment 'when they get this old it is just not worth keep fixing them' !! Remember I am in the school car park and have my young children with me so I kept calm! Next he correctly says it is the accelorator cable but 'not sure I can get one of those for this car'. Somehow he fixed it, so I gave it a quick test drive round the now empty school car park and seemed ok. But later whilst driving along our local dual carriageway I am aware it seems to have a top speed of only 25mph!! Not fun! Quick trip to Halfords to pick up new cable which hubby later fitted correctly and car was zipping along happily again!

have you tried something as simple as removing the float chamber and checking for dirt in the float chamber.
if the car has been off the road for a number of years, it may be that some 'sludge' from the bottom of the fuel tank has made its way through to the float chamber.
remove the brass float, clean it, and re fit it.
i also recommend fitting an in-line fuel filter of some kind.
