First of all, I'm sorry for typing in caps everyone, I suppose I'm just a bit of a lazy typer!
Anyway, thanks so much everyone for all your help, its very much appreciated. In light of all your comments, I think I will first get the brakes serviced as you're right, there's no way on earth the brakes are MEANT to be like this.
If i went down the route of Wolseley drums. what exactly would i need to buy in order to take it to the garage and let them loose on it?
Thanks again for all your help. And IM SORRY FOR USING CAPS.

The technology has move on a bit in the last 40 or 50 years.
Motorways didn't even exist when the Minor was designed.

Yeah i know, but when you can't stop reversing off your drive at about 3MPH, you know things are not quite right!

You need Wolseley drums and back plates, either Wolesley or 1098 Minor wheel cylinders, Wolseley brake shoes and return springs x 4 and you may have to make up the inter cylinder connecting pipes. If you use Minor cylinders you will need to extend the slots in the back plates and reposition the small bolt hole.
Easy peesy

You need Wolseley 1500 parts (or Riley 1.5 if going that route) - not just any-old Wolseley!

Well it worked! Just got the car back from the garage and the brakes are working a treat! Stops really well. Thanks for saving me £500 on disc brakes conversion everyone.
Turns out the brakes fluid was clogged with so much gunk that it stopped the brakes from working. So my mechanic just gave it a good flush through and new fluid, and Bobs your Uncle!
Any suggestions of what may have caused this gunk? He said the master Cylinder may be on the way out? Any ideas?
Thanks again!

Could just be down to it not having been changed for years or indeed could be seal debris floating around the system. However, if the system has been properly bled and is now holding pressure then I'd go for the first suggestion. If you loose the brakes again after a few days it could be down to master cylinder or wheel cylinder failure....

Seems unlikely a 'good flush' could work this miracle cure - fingers crossed for continued success!

Thanks. So do you think the problem might return?

It may also have had quite a bit of air in the system as really they should be bled every couple of years as brake fluid is hydroscopic.

Just hard to imagine a 'good flush' would do much - more likely he has bled the system through, removing all air - adjusted up where necessary, and perhaps freed off any sticking cylinders. With regular use - it should be fine now. Well done the garage - for not selling you a complete new braking system and charging a fortune for the work!

It is surprising how many people drive around with sub standard Minor brakes and accept them as normal.
