Ray you must be unlucky I've been driving longer than I car to remember in cars with dynamo's and alternator' and for many years in modern jelly moulds doing 60K+ miles every year I have had one alternator failure in all that time (a Renault). I've had several dynamos that I had to rebuild or replace.

I'm on the fence here, I guess. I've had one alternator fail on me. That was on a Landrover Discovery and cost about £250 to replace and I've had one dynamo fail which cost me about £15.00 to completely rebuild it. Obviously the alternator has cost me more but then again I've dome many more miles on alternator's than dynamo's over the years....

maybe - out of 10 or so modern cars, I've had to do alternators on most of them. The last one was last month

on the Astra diesel (130k miles) and I couldn't even get near it to replace it, so it's the 3rd time in 10 years I've had a garage do work for me.
When it comes to Minors, I've not met too many people who didn't have an alternator failure - and some had 3 or more fail in a row.
