Same size as the steering wheel nut 3/4 whit.
Pleased that you didn't ask what size chisel to use! :D

Yes -as explained in the 'other' thread - I use a 3/4 Whit socket - and Mark has used a 33 mm to good effect. Then it all went horribly wrong for him.........

Hi, Many thanks for all the useful tips on this thread - the "Starter motor" trick worked well for both the starter dog and also the camshaft gear nut.

Question: My 940 timing cover has an interesting indent, looks like it was deliberately hit with a chisel from the inside (see pic). Doers anybody know if this is a known "mod", perhaps to prevent the felt oil seal from rotating, or should I just chisel it flat again (and what size screwdriver should I use )? :P
Image
Throw it away - and fit the later cover with a proper seal! It's certainly not intentional - just where someone levered out the old (useless) felt seal!

I second that!

The later covers are easily found, and since fitting mine with the rubber seal not a single drop!

Hmmm.
I'd baulk at £35 + VAT & PP (commercial secondhand price for the cover) just to save a few teaspoons of oil from an A-series engine. I reckon felt (with lots of goose-grease) is probably OK for a few miles anyway - the previous one had been on there for about 25 years! Part of my leaking problem was actually caused by the disintegrated timing chain rubber tensioner - lumps of rubber were partially-blocking the drain holes back into the sump from behind the crankshaft gear.

Covers are no-where NEAR that price! Where on earth did you see that ?

Good grief! Madness. Even a brand new one is less than that. http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx? ... %20BREATHE...

I bought my cover from a Mini Wreckers - $15 (about 6 Pounds) plus $3 for the seal (one pound)
