I didn't see the post but I have to say I was suprised when I read through the following posts. I had not known anything that staffsmoggie has ever written to be even the remotely offensive before. It just goes to highlight the levels of security that we must all take - even on home ground!!! Well done for speaking up and clearing the confusion and hopefully staffsmoggie and linearaudio will not feel put off by the incident and continue to contribute to the board....

Thanks for the explanation, SM!
I guessed something had gone awry at your end as it was obviously out of character! No offence taken, but don't think I'll ever dare mention timing chains again

Thank you gents.
I may talk rubbish most of the time but I certainly would never offend anyone!

Is the timing chain endless?
No - like all good things it comes to an end eventually ...
I've fitted one with a split link - no problems with that. However if the sprockets show signs of wear it's not going to last nearly as long as it should.
The duplex kits seem good value for money as they can reduce noise and last longer - the downside being that you have to countersink a couple of holes and you REALLY don't want steel swarf in your engine.

The bottom bolt holes are blind so you can put a magnetised screwdriver in to pick up any swarf.

Yep - and a block magnet alongside the drill bit catches any swarf as it appears. But for quiet running - the Mini sprockets and chain with rubber pad tensioner is a better bet! Duplex is strong - great for high lift/long period cams and/or high pressure valve springs - really not necessary for normal engine, and not necessarily quiet - there is not even the 'rubber ring' tensioner on a duplex set.
