The Lucas coil looks like it was wound by hand in some third world sweatshop.

Good point re: Carrying a spare coil. I recently purchased a new coil and dizzy cap for just this reason. Inexpensive insurance I reckon. And as you say - having them in the boot means the originals will never fail!!
So there's oil inside the coil? This is to keep it cool I am guessing? And does it ever need topping up etc?

Best to fit the new parts to the car - to make sure they work ok - and carry the old parts as, which are in known good working order, as the spares! Add a rotor arm - set of points and a condenser ! Oh - and a spare working fuel pump too.

And, as much discussed recently, always check the primary resistance of any new coil you buy, no matter how once-illustrious the name on the box.
If it's around 1.5 ohms, it's the the wrong one!

Absolutely - you want ~ 3.2 Ohms.
