Took my MZ for an MOT test after replacing the front brake disk...during the test there was an odd clonking sound from the front wheel. After a while the tester found the source of the sound... I'd not tightened the axle before doing up the pinch bolt, so the wheel was slopping around clipping the brake pads on each side... :-/
I was ever-so-slightly embaressed and a more than a little bit glad that they'd retested it rather than just going 'oh yes, new disk, that'll do'.

years ago I was welding some sills on a austin 1300 23000 miles on clock and the lady had owned it from new so it was her pride and would only trust me to do it [Wrong] I was just doing the last bit and the carpet going up the footwell which was wedged had fell down opps fire It burnt the dash seat and the other carpet cost me a day off work looking around scrap yards looking for matching good condition parts to replace . found it all exept the dash had an extra switch so had to fit a fog light she was so chuffed as it was a modern thing and she thought I was being thoughtfull. result was got away with it with air freshners hidden around the car

My mum never said she lived next door to you. Explains that faraway look she gets whenever a Moggy or a scooter drive by.

After driving my newly purchased Spitfire home I was having a look over it and found one track rod end was missing its nut! It was only the taper holding it into the steering arm......

....but luckily my mum was standing just there and was able to help with the Whitworth adjustable spanner she carries everywhere.

Don't worry - the king pin swivels can only fall out when the wheel is lightly loaded - often when turning in at low speed.
As I understand it this is usually the case, but a colleague at work who used to drive a Minor told me he had one collapse on his Minor as he went over a hump back railway bridge in Ashford doing about 40mph!

at which point I expec the wheel is completely unloaded (until it lands with a heavy thump - or in his case as smash, clatter and a deep plough line in the tarmac!!)
