Thanks Rasputin! It's on the roads of Lancashire at the moment, my home county, but I'll have it down here as soon as I can rustle up the £62 cost of the train fare. And the insurance. And the breakdown recovery. Ah well, there's no such thing as a free lunch. And I'm sure it will be worth it. I'm really looking forward to it. Knowing there's such a friendly and informative website really adds to that feeling.

Welcome Tommy! Personally i like the AA and the few times I have had breakdowns I couldnt sort myself they were with me pretty quick and always good guys. I even got a tour of Liverpool at 2 in the morning after breaking down on the M6 on my way to the boat with my newly purchased lowlight....

Thanks David, I quite like the new name you've given me! Just seen that the AA will give me £15 M&S vouchers if I'm invited to join by another AA member - who also gets £15 worth of M&S vouchers! Going to have a look at the RAC site now to see if there's a similar scheme I can get the missis to spring (she's RAC).

just done my splitty with RH £72 comprehensive, unlimited miles ,breakdown cover, free EU cover, buy back salvage, don't know how they can do it ,cheapest I could find,also straight through MOT yesterday,and just gone on line and happy days free years tax

Wow, that sounds amazing! I tried to do an online quote request from RH last night but the 'submit' button produced an email of gibberish so I'll give them a call. I take it you tried the 'in-house' MMOC insurance with Footman James?

A lot of bank accounts throw in breakdown cover, holiday insurance etc etc. The MMOC do a scheme with the RAC which I have to admit were quick off the mark and very helpfull on the couple of times I called them out (That pesky borrowed Morris Minor again).
The last time I broke down on the motorway the highway patrol stood guard whilst I changed the coil.

Hi Mark! Yes, Autonational does seem cheap and they even include caravan breakdown - whatever that is! If I can get the sort of inclusive insurance/breakdown cover mentioned above then that would seem to be the best option. Does Autonational not mind about age of car then? Only I notice some of the recovery operations do. I'd prefer a scheme that's for the driver (in any car) rather than the car on its own.

Hmm, interesting, I'll check with the bank, though I'm with Lloyds and I don't suppose they're giving much away at the moment. I've looked on the MMOC site for details of any RAC linkup but can't find anything. And there's nowt on the RAC website obviously.

Well our Nat west gold account offered free green flag but it only covers taking you 10 miles to the nearest garage if you wanted proper cover it was extra, so I stayed with the RAC and they cover both of us in any car (Moggies included) apart from commercial use vehicles.

Tony I am withLloyds and with my select account I get AA cover and phone insurance it seems a good deal not used the AA cover but have claimed a phone when I dropped it down bog [dont ask] with no problems at all

Thanks Mike, Kevin and Tog. Yep, Lloyds do do b/down cover if you upgrade to a 'silver' account (at least), only trouble is it's £8 a month for the account! Could be worth it if I lob my phone down the loo, something I have been tempted to do on occasion – usually while trying to talk to a human being on the Lloyds helpline.

And yes I can't believe my luck about the National Rally venue. Must be good karma or something. I'm hoping to get to the regional meet on 6 March (I think?) too, but it'll depend on me being able to get up to Mark C's to collect the car! Otherwise I'd feel a bit weird turning up in my Ibiza - even if it is an Ecomotive.

Been an RAC member for yonks - family cover (been a member since before I was born apparently )

However I also have free green flag with my bank account. Before going with either AA/RAC/GF - all are a bit of a muchness tbh give your bank a call and see how much they can do it for!

Thanks Dan, hooking myself onto the missis's RAC membership should be the best option, financially at least. But as Mark says, Jenny won't be breaking down anyway… oops, there goes me karma.
