Coming into the worst part of the year- I'd give it 3 months- waste of good paint and lots of tears shed around february time

The reason he quoted a 'reasonable price' is because he is a friend of my brothers.
He suggested the best bet was to replace the wing but given the fact these older style wings are difficult to come by I'll have to ask him what his opinion is on repairing it.
I think the rust appears a lot worse in the photos than it actually is. I'm sure it's only surface and hasn't eaten the wing away to the thickness of tissue paper. But as I said I'll ask the guy his opinion before we go ahead with the respray

I would survey the whole car very carefully before launching into a re-spray. To do it properly you need to take the screens (front and rear) out - not easy to refit, and remove all lights/chrome etc - then refit afterwards. It's quite an undertaking!

You are likely to find some rot hidden under the wing too
A proper panel beater / body shop would be able to repair the wing by removing the rotten bits and welding new metal in.
Bear in mind that a good job is not cheap. There's many hours involved to get it right and a lot of skill. Make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing! Most bodyshops would not be able to do it right as they don't need those skills anymore - insurance companies only want to pay enough for a YTS kid to apply filler .

Yes I agree.... Been there and done that and this was just one week before the National last year. Still no MOT at this point in time!! That week was frantic

Looks liek an easy enough repair. As has been suggested, the wing needs to be off and you may be lucky and find its not holed. Early panels can be quite sturdy and it may clean up ok. If not cutting out the rot and butt welding in repair sections should sort it.
Its not too bad a job to reshape the arch on a new late type wing to make an early one, but I don't think your wing is that bad at all.
