Make sure you do recieve the letter of acknowlegement from them. I never got one for a car I sold 18months ago and have now been fined for not taxing it or declaring sorn. Apparently it is the registered keepers responsibility to check that the DVLA have ackowledged reciept of the change (sorn/ownership whatever) and you will be fined if they don't send you the letter!
Needless to say, I'm not impressed....

My experience of SORN is that a couple of years prior to it's inception, I bought an untaxed Minor with a reg number of personal interest to me. I was able to SORN it without problem. Recently deciding to transfer the number & on checking with DVLA was told this was okay, however the process was then blocked by them on the grounds that there had been a break between the time it was last taxed & the time it was SORNed. The only way round it being to tax & MOT the donor vehicle. Charlie.

That's the same procedure as before SORN was introduced, and whether it is SORN or not.

Thanks Ray, just to take this a stage further, I should have added that in my case, to have restored the donor vehicle to MOT standard is economically out of the question.
So how is it that you can see sale adverts for registration numbers without a vehicle & in particular I am thinking of companies selling a selection of hundreds of numbers, they surely can't have hundreds of vehicles as well. Charlie.

You can put a reg number on "retention" with the DVLA before the MOT (or shortly after) expires. The reg numbers you see for sale are all retained and therefore no cars are needed....

have a look at:

www.saynoto0870.com

to get a cheaper number to call.....

Especially if you might get held in a queue.

Had a look for you:

Vehicle Licence Applications and SORN Declarations
0870 8504444 or 01792 772232

Some local office numbers shown too, as well as numerous alternative numbers.

Good luck.

OK spoke to DVLA and their words were, no need to SORN since it wasn't taxed when SORN was introduced.

Their advice was, restore the car get it back on the road ie MOT and tax then transfer the car ownership from my parents to myself. At the same time we will then receive the latest type of registration document, but the old one we have at the moment is still legal and binding. They did say under no circumstances will we lose the registration plate as we still have the original documents in our possession, which ties up with the information they have on our moggy :)

Rubbish advice if I may be so bold. This is not impossible, but it is hard to do legally, as to get it MoT'd you have to insure it. You can't legally insure a car belonging to someone else, and in the eyes of the law (in this respect) the owner will be the person registered. So you will need to get it insured in your parent's name, with you as a named driver, to drive it to the MoT station, and of course to tax it.....

Unless you drive it illegally, but I'd never condone that!

Yes of course it will all be in my parents name, then get it transferred into my name as if it had been a normal sale.

Oh, OK then, if that's perfectly practicable in your case then do it that way. 8)

However, if - for example - that had been advice given to someone who had no contact with the existing registered owner, it would have been pretty useless advice eh?

All the best! :D :D

I was asked for an update? So passed it on! That was what the DVLA advised under my circumstances as someone suggested I could lose the reg. It appears as long as the current owner has the registration documents then all is not lost registration plate wise according to the DVLA, no matter how long the car has been off the road.
