Really 60 mpg overall ? Or is that driving like the Travellers I had to squeeze past last sunday - doing 45 mph on a wide straight open road!

'Really' 60mpg overall. On the track the 1.4 was thrashed by Tiff Needell and still returned 40mpg. The 1.1 can be made to reach almost 65mpg if economy driving is adhered too. Its the addition of the Ford box that improves the economy no end. Obviously if you really 'rag' the 1.1 economy will suffer, but to no less than 50mpg.
The 1.1 produces around 75bhp and the 1.4 around 104bhp so you really do not need to thrash them to make pretty rapid progress. The 1.1 also came with a carb for those who insist on fiddling

60 MPG and performance, the words Cake and Eat it spring to mind. I WANT ONE NOW!

Yep -sounds almost too good to be true. I don't think the Metro with that engine was all that economical -was it ?

Ahh the benefits of a decent ECU and better breathing, no cat and a long legged gearbox go along way to providing the improvements. Wouldn't be skeptical, north of the border, would we ?

It would all depend on cost for me, not being a wealthy man.

Well there is a downside

the conversion cost is around £7K and you will need to modify the front X member and bulkhead X member. The battery box needs to be cut back or removed completely depending on a carb or injection set up.
From the bell housing back is as would be with a modded A series, ie Ford type 9. You can of course use used motors, gearboxes and plumbing parts which will save money, but the kit, loom and mods do add up, but probably to no more than converting to diesel power, plus its a proven product, with performance.

You can buy a hell of a lot of petrol for seven grand

Can not argue with that !

but any major conversion will cost more than it saves. Hence better an A series on LPG and no performance

Aye - but many don't need loads of extra performance - if it will accelerate reasonably and cruise at 70, could be a very acceptable compromise.

The 1.1 K would do nicely then, but naturally if on a budget the A series on gas would be the choice.

My traveller always went well with the 1098 anyway. Especially with the twin carbs and earlier (950 type) diff...
That may be so but what happened to the top end, and I bet it was noisy above 50

If I wasn't now a 'poor pensioner' I'd say sod the money, gimme the power and smoothness and you can have seven grand. Not in a Traveller mind you, a tidy 2 door saloon in black would be my choice, and keep it looking bog standard. Would have some fun with the boy racers in their mums Clio

Has anyone looked into the Peugeot 1500cc diesel unit? I had to change the head gasket on one of these and (as I am want to do) was musing on the possibilities of a minor transplant. If I'm right then there is a possibility that the Engine could have an adapter plate machined to fit between the Peugeot engine and moggie gearbox.
The "Exhauster" would have to come off I think and the fuel pump would have to be moved and of course i have no idea what happens underneath (is the diff in the sump or separate?)
The performance is pretty amazing ..I drove from Henley to Paris and back for about €60 worth of Diesel. And the 106 is comfortable at 80mph.
anyone done anything more than think about this one?

Sounds like loads of work - converting a front wheel drive engine to run a rear wheel drive car - not easy!
