A reply (finally) from the relevant ministry:
----------------------------------------------
There are no specific requirements as such in the Construction and Use Regulations for the position (or size) of the exhaust pipe on a vehicle. However there is a general requirement, under regulation 100, that a motor vehicle must at all times be in such condition that no danger is caused or is likely to be caused to any person in or on the vehicle or on the road. This might apply for instance to a protruding exhaust.
Regulation 54 also requires that exhaust systems and silencers be maintained in good working order and not altered so as to increase noise. At MoT the tester will assess the noise from a vehicle to ensure that it does not exceed what might be expected for a vehicle of that age and type.
-----------------------------------------------
So there you go. I intend to make sure that the exhaust does not protrude.

My silencer fell to bits on the way home from work many years ago, and as I needed the car the next day I set to with the brazing rods and made a side exit exhaust from some electrical conduit I had laying around (no silencer straight onto the downpipe)
Anyway I started it up late that night after I had finished and I thought it sounded quite good and not too loud!
Next day going to and from work it was SO LOUD, I found myself gradually slowing down cause I didn't want to press the accelerator.
I bought a new exhaust.
