Has anyone over this side of the pond done what Jaekl has done.
Possible Cambridge/Oxford outer rims. What size are they?

I promise I won't; seen the last scabby pair on ebay go for £64! I couldn't chop up that sort of money when I now have a plan for std rims!

Ray, I have just picked a wheel up from scrapyard that is only3" wide. The number on inside of rim is LP802 DRC 3.0 x 14 UE ( the 8 could be a 3)
It came of a Minor and had nuts on not bolts. Any ideas?

You will find that the rims on 14" Vauxhall wheels will fit snugly inside the centres from Minor wheels - and so it is possible to make your own wide wheels - IF you have decent facilities and are a very competent welder. I mocked one up some years ago - but have never had enough faith in my welding to finish the job off.

You must be able to read my mind Roy. Never mentioned that. Haha. But I found out that Transit wheels were what Minor developments used so went to scrappies this morning and got one. Very heavy wheel though. Might try Vauxhall.
Wouldn't weld it myself though. Would tack it up and then take it to a welder. What size rim are the Vauxhalls?

The one I used was 5.5" - makes a nice wheel although the tyre valve ended up on the inside of the wheel! Would be easy enough to drill another hole and fit another valve on the outer rim.

Would probably be lighter than Transit wheel. Can you remember what Vauxhall it was off?

Hmm - to be honest I paid more attention to the van and MD rims than standards.
I'm 1005 sure about the 4.5" and 5" tho

Can you please explain offset? I have just measured a saloon wheel and from the face that actually bolts to the hub to the inner wheel edge is 3 1/2" an at the front it is 11/16".

Well - 'offset' would suggest that the centre of the wheel would be further outboard than the flat face of the brake drum. Obvious;y - with standard rims - it's NOT!

Very poor explanation on my part. But BMCEcosse got there first.

I had an experiment with a 14 inch ford rim. The minor center fits a treat but welding causes lots of disstortion.

Yes - that would my fear. If I do have a go - it will be short runs on alternate sides with much cooling between.

My understanding is that it is illegal to do this modification unless you are a certified wheel builder. they need to be machine welded to a 'code' rating and then crack tested or xray'd to make sure of the weld quality, after this they need to be balanced correctly.
If you do throw caution to the wind be certain to let your insurance company know. Not an area for home modification in my books.

Thought that only applied to 'widening' by welding in bands of steel. But yes - I am reluctant to get into this, which is why the wheel has lain unwelded for 3 years so far!
