1 3/8" was the perfect size. However, I had to grind the sides of the socket down to fit it in there. The socket I found was a 3/4" drive, for which I did not have a wrench or adapter, but I stuck the handle end of the wrench in the drive end of the socket and then used a Crescent wrench (adjustable spanner?) on that.

Over here that's called Yankee Ingenuity (among other things)!

I then restored the wheel, filling cracks with epoxy putty, and primed and painted gloss black, with a gloss clear coat as well.\
