Had the same situation some time ago, my method to get out the socket was by inserting a thick cardboard strip with the magnet attached to the bottom, that way it did not stick to the whole body and only attracted the socket once it got near the bottom.

It took me a while to figure this out but when I used it, it was successful first time.

Please don't all jump on me at once, but how about cutting a neat access hole then pop rivet a cover plate on ready for next time!

Strikes me that it's a high stress area of the car though, so not sure I'd trust pop rivets
