The other way round, surely? They had to retool for the later style of combined sidelight/indicator, when they could instead have changed to a Mini style headlight with integrated sidelight and fitted an indicator where the sidelight was on earlier cars.

Don't know when the front light changed, and was too lazy to look it up - hence the '?'

All they would have to have done is put an orange bulb (or orange lens) in the original side-light fitting!
