Now that seems like an idea, especially as any oil would hold the dust and muck. Although I can't help feeling its an ingenious solution to a problem that should never have existed.

I agree, they should have setup a proper rubber seal. Remember the engine is one of the few things that Alec Issigonis did not design! If we had been given the flat four he intended I'm sure it would not have this problem.
When the car is running I will see if any oil is going along the pipe. But I might be lucky, and not have a leak from mine, it seems to vary alot from one engine to another.

the mechanic who used to work for esm, said do not fit the opil seal conversion, more trouble that its worth

The bottle and the pipes above will all need to be able to withstand full vacuum (= 14.7 psi) which plastic pipe like that will not! It will just be squashed flat by the atmosphere!
