Or am I just not that good with the things?
Tin- snips, chisels (fine steel chisels) and pliers!

The association of precision angle grinders will be upset by recent remarks! Some of them have spend years perfecting their art. The pass out test involves fashioning a 1 inch cube to within 1 thou + or- and perfectly flat, using no more than a standard disc..

Grinding or cutting dic?

It's a free choice of disc! But once you've decided that's it. Not many use a dic !!!

Must say ultra fine cutting discs or dics can be used with great precision in the right hands. You could use one just to cut 1/2 way through the steel and finish cut with a good ol' wood chisel or proper ones as per John's pics.

Mr Flatbum - who started all this - could I suppose just flood the section between decks with Waxoyl - should be ok for a few years anyway! The 'new' floor underneath would be best painted with zinc under coat followed by chassis black.

If the gap was big enough, he could cut access panels complete with hinges and use the secret compartments to store things! ;-)
