That's the urban myth, anyway, but the difference in the names isn't. I think, btw, that that's acceptable for a family audience, but delete it if not - it's a favourite story of mine

Andrew, you are talking about two different products - it was Jif that turned into Cif, not Vim?
Great story though

Julliet - how can you expect a man to understand the finer details of cleaning products? The best we can usually manage is "does it get grease off my hands/best shirt/carpet"!!

You're right - my bad. Probably because I'm WAY TOO YOUNG to remember the products. No, really. Really...
Have I gotten away with that?

oh, sorry dude, i thought you were an elderly kind of cove. I'll stop treating you with respectful deference right away, then.
Exactly how old
are you? as "Jif" changed to "Cif" about three years ago

Do you remember when you last had it? Try checking down the back of the sofa.

Well can I add an on topic comment, now it's off topic??
I wouldn't run without an air cleaner at all. Did this for just one day with a Honda moped and wore the bore / rings out. I guess the air intake might have been picking up road spray with dirt in it, but I would never take the risk again! Just my 2p's worth.

I didn't mean to, and I really hope I haven't done any serious damage.

You'd know if you had.
You might have sped up the rate of engine wear considerably compared to running with a filter. But given the Minor has an air intake stuck near the top of the engine bay well away from any low level spray or road dirt, and the weather has been mostly cold and wet, I doubt you'll have done any significant damage at all.

What was the small person doing where your filter should be?

If its any consolation Ford Pops didn't have air or oil filters.

tiny bits of grit can sometimes become lodged inside the SU's needle seat causing wear or over fueling of bad running, have you noticed anything wrong with the running lumpyness at times perhaps bad in cold starts and uneven idle? only time i ran no filter on an SU was to a garage who were supplying one

Actually, yes I have. It started stuttering (there's a thread about an intermittent misfire) and it's not idling very well.
A carb stripdown might be in order, but the engine's coming out soon.

would seem that a rebuild is in order im not sure where your able to get rebuild kits but they are available from
http://www.minispares.com/ which is a mini specialist good luck with finding parts on there can be a little cluttered at time

Surely running with no air filter will mean the mixture is very lean as there is far less restriction? Maybe that's the cause of the misfire?
If you're junking the engine soon for the turbo unit then there seems little point in doing anything to it, so long as it runs.

wouldnt cause a missfire because a spark can still light it if the mix was too rich the plugs would be come wet giving misfire, also depending on the filter in the car there might not be that much difference in the restriction difference wih it on or off
