They can be interesting. Used mine today to get back from Charles Ware's new shop, on a road I didn't know in a town I'd lived in for 25 years, through the rush hour to home. She seemed to be MOST put out that I wouldn't go back into the centre of Bristol and head for the motorway, a detour of about 35 miles. Left it turned on for comedy value, mind...

I have a hand held GPS that I use in the hills never without a compass though.
I use it woods when I walk the dogs I simply record the position of the car. After an hour or so I turn it back on and it gives me the distance and direction back to the car.
I also use it at the NEC to find the quickest way back to my car!

It probably saved my life on Ben Nevis in a white out when I was able to retrace my steps back down from the summit with visability down to 2 metres.

When we were walking in Norway I didn't buy any expensive maps just went for a walk and followed the GPS back. The benifit of going off the beaten track was seeing a lone wolf and tracking a herd of reindeer.

Sorry for the anti-GPS rant. I think they are great tools for those who use them when out walking in the wilds. I was mainly thinking of their ability to remove common sense when people are driving. ;-)
