Me too, first car was a Minor at 17. After the insurance I couldn't afford even a new battery so regularly started it on the starting handle. Eccentric but practical.

At the time I was having lessons in a Metro and driving the Minor with dad to get experience. As Alex said earlier the Minor is different but _not_ harder to drive. As you get used to the differences everything will become smoother and become second nature.

As for nervousness, that too will disappear soon enough - but consider this, you are more likely to be visible in an unusual car than something more run of the mill. Moreover, if you are already have an affinity with the Minor it'll be the start of an adventure rather than just learning to drive:)

My first car was a 1962 2-door Old English White Morris Minor called Albert, 3 years ago now when I was 18.

The difference will be noticeable, but plenty of driving in the Morris will make you a more competent driver and able to get into other cars and drive them with little or no trouble. Mine helped me in that respect.

There great first cars, people always give you a look and many a smile and a wave.

I love them so much my first racing cars is going to be a Minor!

I passed my test last may after learning on my instructors corsa, the mog is much better to drive by far... its rear wheel drive!! , Mog was a very good learner car because you have to think more carefully about the fact that your stopping distance is.. well long... very long! and also wing mirrors are a waste of space.. or on mine they are anyway!
I drive a huge 03 plate defender now aswell which is very cool, but mog is still the best

anyone else found mogs do quite good handbrake turns? sadly the school bus park surface isnt very good but our carpark is mint

I'm also learning to drive in a Corsa while doing up my Mog. My Morris isn't roadworthy yet, so I'm learning in dull modern Vauxhalls (instructor's Corsa & my mum's Zafira) so that taking my test in a Corsa ought to be no problem. Then I'll start driving the Morris (ought to be worth the wait!)

Many people would probably have no problem switching between a Morris and a modern while learning to drive, but I'm not taking the risk of getting into a Morris style of driving (different switches & controls, different brakes, no synchro on first) while in the Corsa. Is this smart or foolish?

I found it easier driving lots of different cars while learning.

It meant I never felt 'Tied' to any particular Car. I could have taken my test in anything and not really had much to worry about over and above the normal 'Am I doing this manoevre right'

Admittedly this was all 17 years ago (OH MY GOD is it that long? I've had a Licence for as long as I haven't, if you get my drift)
