ARGH!!!!! I 'm lost!
(it's got a brand new coil and condensor)

Check the rotor arm - there was a duff batch of these a while back where the insulation started to conduct when hot.

If you've still got the old coil and it wasn't faulty when you replaced it, try putting it back and see if the problem goes away.

It's had the exactly the same symptoms for ages and all sorts have been replaced including the coil.
Totally stumped!

Probably not the coil then if the old one and the new one both did the same thing.

You need to do the checks when it has conked out 'hot' otherwise you can miss the problem
Do you still get a spark when it conks out? [Check by removing a lead and connecting to a spare plug - rest it on the block / head nuts to earth it]
Do you still get a good flow of petrol to the carb when it is conked out? [by removing pipe from carb - takes 2 seconds to check - but don't smoke at the same time as therw will be an abundance of petrol around if it is working ok!]

yep.... I'd agree.
My ideas........
Overheating? (Gives similar symptoms to running out of fuel, and a dodgy thermostat would be the most likely culprit)
Blockage in the carb (even though everything I've looked at seems clean now and general opinion is that they can run with lots of crap in the system!)

We checked the flow when it was running rough today, it was conking out but not as undriveable as the other day.
Not checked the spark as it always seems to idle fine, and only suffers under load which suggests fueling to me.

Did you check for vacuum in the tank when it conks out ? Obviously your pump/filter etc is fine - and it cannot be the thermostat!!! If it's not vacuum - then start looking at the ignition circuit - something is heating up - try a new condenser.

I had a faulty rotor arm - that showed up as a missfire under partial load - and eventually died completely in the fast lane of M6 with my sister driving.
