I would agree - the length of the plian section was probably set to make sure they were max strength at the joint area (where they would be in shear under high propshaft load). As for the lengthe - there's not a lot of room to get them in/out so if they were any longer they would be more fiddly.

You're probably right Ray, the plain section of the original bolts is not as long as on a standard bolt. Enough to just enter the diff. coupling flange and not "run out" of thread when tightening the nut. (If inserted from the front end of the car).)
