Minis with this pump - in a very confined space right beside the exhaust - never give any problems with fuel vapourisation. The slight churning before the engine starts is good - it gets some oil round the engine!

yes ray agreed about paint colour and stickers, but what i said as well was that austin only engines had the opening in the side of the block for the fuel pump, but morris juat had the casting with no hole :D

Dennis where did you get that info from, I am not saying its wrong but I have seen the blanked off opening on quite a few moggies (1098cc) and I would have though it unlikely that they were all Austin engines (although its possible) but also some of the `A` series Midget engines also have the blanking plate.
I wonder if its down to where the blocks were sourced from maybe 2 different ones or maybe if there was a glut of Austin blocks and a bit of a shortage of Morris ones some got swapped around perhaps.

No idea about the Midget engines, but in my experience it's true that only the Austins had it. I don't think I've ever spotted one on a Morris - but that could be my not lookibg :D

I've seen one or 2 on Minor saloons, but presumed that was due to an engine change - maybe the aftermarket engines (e.g. goldseal and so on) sometimes had the hole?
with some green paint and using the rocker cover off the original Morris engine, most people would be unlikely to spot any differences.

That and the fact that a LOT of LCVs had a comparitively short life span, and the engines must have gone somewhere :D

Both my 1098 engines - both originals from Minors - have blanking plates over the fuel pump hole.

Are they from late model Travellers? These too were built in Birmingham - I'm just curious as to whether that's the conection.

Is it easy to tell the Austin from the Morris blocks?
My last two engines have got the opening, the two down the shed, sorry, spares department don't.
As for experience, I'm on the same mechanical pump for ten years now but have had 2 or 3 SU's fail before that. They all suffered terribly in the hot weather but the mechanical one is fine. I do however keep an SU bolted in place just in case as it's easier to swap back if I do have a problem.
If I remember correctly it was a Moprod FP53 pump and was A LOT cheaper than a new SU at the time.
