For all to see this was my PM to Twincamturbo. If anyone thinks it is rude then tell me and I will apologise.

Subject: Wolseley/Riley Minor Brakes
Why oh why!

This post wasn't a discussion about the merits of disc over drums. That has been done plenty of times. Why do disc users have to try and belittle those of us who decide to try upgrade there brakes without going the disc route?
Just dont understand it.

Yes, sorry, this forum has not changed. It has a reputation as one of the worst for bitching and making people feel unwelcome. It's very sad that newbies are made to feel unwelcome.

This forum needs new blood, different ideas and new members if the lovely morris minor is not to fade into oblivion in the next 5 years.

Look at the vibrant and open minded VW community and then look how many beetles have been dragged out of scrapyards and saved. There is a connection.

I'm obviously not welcome here, and would rather not be tempted to come back and end up spending sunday evenings posting in arguments.

I wish you the best of luck.

I'm sorry that you had to go down this road because you could not handle a difference of opinion. Your comments about the Minor are untrue I'm glad to say. The club is as healthy and vibrant as ever and more and more Minors are being rescued and restored. This messageboard continually has new members who add to the 'community' and has built this messageboard into what it is now which is the heart of this award winning classic car website.

I hope you learn to be more tolerant of other people's views in the future.

Personally I'd argue this is a vibrant message board with young blood, as I know of there are me and Tris, myself being 18 and Tris hasn't passed his test yet! There is also the chappy with the modded 1098 and crossplies! As well as many members from all age groups which is shown from the thread in general discussion. To re assure you all, when I got my moggy and didn't have a clue I felt most welcome here! I think the fact that board members are more than happy to answer those 'how do i' posts in great detail despite the fact they've come up many times before shows just how accepting and friendly this board is!

On the subject of drums....I've been paying with the idea of (when I have time/money/equipment/skill) to do so; build a modded mog as though it had been done in the 70's, and would definately like to incorporate wolsey/riley drums as a period upgrade!

PS. sorry to jump in on this, but it seemed so negative I thought i'd try and re-assure everyone on their message board! :D

Wanderinstar, I haven't heard of the wolsey rear brake conversion before. Is it straightforward like the fronts? Also is the increase noticeable with it being at the rear?

Yes its just the same. the only thing you need is the Wolseley backplates. All the front 8" brake bits fit. Obviously you need the Minor rear cylinders, the backplates need filing a bit to make the cylinders fit. Instead of the cylinders being in the 3 oclock and 9 oclock positions they are about 45deg lower on the backplate. the outer brake cable on the axle needs tweeking to accomodate this.

Yep - had these rear brakes on my Rally Minor 40 years ago ! They were absolutely marvellous for hand-brake turns - but really no need for them on any sanely driven Minor on the open road. My standard 7" handbrake will lock the wheels on a dry road (if I pull really hard!) which is good enough. The rear backplates are like gold-dust - most seem to remove the diff and then scrap the complete axle when they break a Wolseley 1500.

Now Glad i managed to find one of these complete with 3.7 and larger drums hope to fit it one day with 1275 engine (when i find a good one).

just bought a 195? guessing 1956 as it has split screen it has a servo fitted and what looks like wolsely front drums.

its jammed in a corner and i cant get a good look at the car but the price was very right...

still to get the car home though to my "steptoes yard" as the wife and neighbours are beginning to call it..

ps...sorry if this is off topic

Well - you seem to have a happy knack of finding these nice big brakes !!

Well i'd be happy to accept any surplus of wolsey brakes abyone may have. I'm a bit cautious of discs as they don't seem a very period upgrade.

Some riley drums on E-bay.

With regards to the first post..no I haven't got them on mine (MM) but I have Riley rears on my Lenham Healey (plus FF1600 discs on the front) and had Wolseley rears on my Mk2 sprite. Riley rear drums were the factory racer preferred option. Best handbrake ever! The Mk2 axle is for sale as is the Riley front brakes with brand new cyls.

Well I'm glad that open minded, non childish debate is allowed to continue on here amongst the majority, even if there are a few odd people who can't stand to see any opinion that is different to theirs. I expect that's why this site has a growing membership and a great reputation. Minor owners must be the most diverse bunch of any car club so if you can't be open minded you're going to be easily upset.

My traveller is upgraded to 8" front brakes. I upgraded my 54 to 8" front brakes. I've got 9" front brakes to upgrade my 948cc 1957, but not fitted them as the car is a long way from finished.
[The long term plan for the 57 is to go with further upgrades to engine, running gear and brakes anyway, but it will hit the road wth drums]

I have a second set of 9" brakes for spares - neither set has working cylinders so they will be converted to use Minor cylinders.

Please bear in mind that I have just arrived and I may be talking out of turn, but is does seem from reading this thread that the opposite is true, that one person has been hounded off the discussion by other people behaving just as badly.

Though I disagree with the way turbo dealt with these issues by leaving and did seem to go off topic, (no one did ask for opinions), at the same time I think folks have taken what was said out of context and his posts were dismembered in an inflamitory way line by line, which does have the effect of winding people up.

I don't see how sending turbo weird PM's helped the matter either.

Maybe the mods should think about this again? If I were Ray, I wouldnt have posted that last bit, especially as the other party is no longer here.

I have posted a bit about this in the suggestions thread in the discussions forum, where I suggested a little area for modding questions to avoid this sort of thing.

We all love the old mog at the end of the day. We need to stick together as Judge said. If I were a mod, I would ask him back and set differences aside. Turbo is probably a hot head and may never reply, but an applogy on both sides is called for I think, if only to keep the peace :)

Anyway, I'm going back to aviod beemers in my drum braked car :)

I take your point and I did wonder about that - If he was still here I would not have put that as he'd probably take it personally rather than a generalised point relating to a couple of threads over the last 2 years. I was mindful not to make any comments relating to any particular poster.

Personally I'm happy to see debate - so feel free to say anything you want about my comments :D

I can't wait until i'm joining you :D . My traveller is marooned in the garage and my 57 is desperately awaiting the warm cosy garage space and some long overdue TLC
