Hi Ash, Your car is coming along nicely. Would it not be easier to get a set of konis or spax coilovers from a mini and then change the springs to suit your engine

I might take a look at mounting the top mount in double shear like at the top. The reason I have put them like this for the moment is to allow for the arc of the arm, but also the top mount is a little further back for cleareance.

I think there should be enough give, I have also drilled the lower channel slightly staggered (the rear hole is 4 mm lower) to help with this.

Unfortunately hes still not coming along as fast as I would like. Got some expensive parts to buy next but they will bring me a lot closer to the next milestones.

The Mini ones might have worked, but I have specifically gone a long way outboard to get a favorable wheel ratio, and the top mount is where it is so that it ties into the bulkhead X-member for maximum strength. I dont think a mini damper would span the gap . I remember when I was buying Mona, he said the dampers were off a mini.

The dampers that Im using are SPAX coilovers, except that they will be my design! there is a section at the rear of the catalogue where you can choose from a load of options to design your own damper.

Cool, well you've designed everything else eh! Why not your shox.

Sounds expensive! surely this is a better time than any to make the car fit a readily available off-the-shelf unit for ease of replacement in future.

likewise, i'd recommend you keep a good list of where you got all of these bits from (vehicle donor) so you know what to replace it with in the future.

a standard minor is easy. when you need to buy something, you ask for a *wotsit* for a morris minor. when it's been modified so much, getting spares could be a bit of a headache!

All of the running gear on my Morris is Ford so it's not too much of a headache but yes you still need a list of what parts you've used. Looking forward to seeing your new shox though it's always a boost in progress to see shiny new parts on the car

Its not too dear in the grand scheme of things. £139.99 per damper incl VAT. Now that I have chosen my Spec I have a part number that I can order any time

I have already started a list of parts, theres an added level of complexity because some parts are modified too!

2 front dampers, an ECU, a load of wiring and an exaust will be a massive boost! anyone want to buy a kidney?

Right then...

Progress has been a bit slower than I would have liked so my 1000th post will be a bit more sedate than I had hoped.

I have been doing a lot of faffing recently so not too much to report, bit of a recap on some items:

the coil pack is mounted and the engine covers are on so its looksing a bit prettier, and a bit more full!



You can see on the drivers side of the engine that I have got the idle control vlavle on, I have used a seperate filter to save on piping:




With the engine covers on, the engine looks like its in the battery box!




I have also been fitting fuel lines so im missing some skin of my knuckles!




And I wasnt sure if I had posted current pics of the pedals so here you go


Still got the get front dampers and an ECU, then we will see some real progress!

Im bidding on a few after market exhausts so I should be able to get some exhaust on him for the first firing

All looking good, did you have any luck with the exhausts? I just read through from the start, when you think of how decrepit Igor was when you started it's an impressive amount of work!

We had a bit of luck when one of our neighbours who runs a small scrap metal business knocked on the door to ask if we'd be interested in some wings and a bonnet for the traveller. Only a little surface rust and 50 quid the lot with 4 hubcaps thrown in

The Merc might be going too, a too good to miss (hopefully) Astra with the 1.7 isuzu turbo diesel came up so we're looking at it on Saturday and will use it as a daily drive until the traveller is ready to take the engine

Is it a standard VR6 ecu that you need? If so, I had to replace our ecu with a new one when trying to locate a fault. Works perfectly well. AAA engine code, IIRC. Any good?

Hey Phillip, I have just been putting a thread together on another forum and had forgotten how bad he was!
Shame the merc might be going, hopefully the astra will serve you well.

I pucked up an EVO 6/8 stock exhaust for a tenner, 2.5", stainless and got a silencer in there, that should cover most of the requirements.

Score with the Scrap man, you want to get friendly with him, after all there is norman to think of ;)


Rob, I have the stock VR ECU, but im going to Megasquirt so its not a lot of use, wanna buy one? I also have some odds and sodds including PAS pump and AC pump. Let me knwo if your interested.

In spite of it being Lynda's idea she suddenly went cold turkey and decided that she'd miss the Merc too much On the other hand we're no where near needing the engine and it opens out our choices, can go 1.5TD with the escort axle and 3.54 diff or 1.7TD with the capri axle and 3.09 diff.

So still waiting on the megasquirt and front dampers then. We haven't come across anyone wanting a kidney up here!
