dashpot

Post by Peetee »

So when the carb dashpot level falls drastically within a couple of hundred miles, where does the oil go to and what can you do to stop it?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Take the piston out and see if there is a leak. It can't really leak out, but if it does then there must be a crack somewhere. The answer to which is a replacement piston or carb.

Perhaps you've been overfilling the dashpot - the oil isn't supposed to come right to the top. If there's too much then when the piston rises the excess will be expelled through the small hole in the plastic cap.

It usually settles out and then stays constant - test is to lift the piston with your finger - does it rise with smooth constant resistance all the way ? If so - all is well! Don't worry too much about the oil level - a little will do.

Hello Peetee,

I agree with BMC, but just a point, if you replace a piston it needs to be both piston and dashpot as they should be a matched set. (Ideally)

That's what i thought. however when Joe was fitted with the 1275 lump I topped up the dashpot. Now I've done about 4-500 miles and he is running a bit rougher and I checked the level and it was out of sight. I've topped it up again and he seems happier so I'll keep an eye on the level.

Hopefully when I get a large valve head the carb will be coming off and the head, a new manifold and HIF is going on. And bigger brakes, rear telescopics and antiroll bar. Then it will be down the rolling road. :D

Agree with all that - except the arb !! Far better to add tele dampers at the front! How large is the large valve head going to be ?
