Really big brakes
Just finished fitting a really, really big brake set up on my moggy. 280mm vented and groved discs and 4 pot RS500 Cosworth calipers and all in one afternoon. Everything, well nearly everything, worked as planned. Yippee - mind you still have to bleed the damn things and they have dual bleed nipples on.
Why - well it seemed like a good idea and I don't use a servo.
That's it just happy.

He's got a tuned 2L Fiat twin-cam that I raced (and of course lost) at Santa Pod.
I agree that it's overkill, but who cares? You can't have such a thing as an 'overbraked' car. Standard drums will lock the wheels up if you slam on hard, it's just that they can't do it often without overheating which is where discs have the advantage. Bigger discs just mean even less prone to overheating. I have to say though that I have not managed to overheat my JLH Ford (Escort?) vented disc kit and I'm very pleased with it.
Wal, sounds good. Do you have any pictures?

Hi,
yes I agree it is a bit of overkill, and yes I run tuned Fiat Twin cam.
Part of the reason is that I want to take the car on the track this year and feel more comfortable with a bit of extra brake surface to cool. But the the real reason is they fill the alloys up soooooooooooooooo much better and look really cool.
I could probably take some photos but I can't post them, no facility. If Cam is willing to host them I can email them to him?
Regards,
Wal

More to do with sticky tyres and the Mini's weight distribution rather than being 'overbraked'.bmcecosse wrote:Have seen Minis so overbraked (and tyred) the car could lift the rear wheels right off the ground under braking.
That all depends on fitting the correct pads for the application which of course must not be overlooked. Not much to do with the large diameter discs.Big brakes are fine if you need them - otherwise they may run too cold and not be effective when needed !
Cam,
thanks for posting the picys.
Dp,
well identified it is indeed an oil accumulator / accusump, a life or engine saver for the tuned engine. Though, as said, reading the dial while driving is a bit of a pain. Though whatever it says while driving is mostly irrelevant except in serious driving mode. Excellent for upsetting inexperienced MOT inspectors though who always think its a Nitro tank - I wish.

YES - well done - I like them !! Will you be doing a 'how to' write up for us ? Are the hubs still 4" pcd ? Or are they on the Ford pitch (whatever that is - 100mm ?) ?
With these big brakes - and fancy wheels - and arb - I am surprised not to see tele dampers on there! They make a huge difference.
