rear hub

Post by Onne »

I was changing (or attempting to!) the oil seal on the rear hub. So out came the halfshaft. I had a new rubber o-ring but the darn thing was WAY too big.

So my question, what other hubs fit on the Minor? Mine obviously aren't the correct ones. The rubber O-ring is the right one!

Onne

(my local Minor enthusiast said old hubs off prewar cars were also fitted as a bodge?)

What pcd are your hubs ? I think they are very model specific - but of course also used on A35/A40 and Spridgets. I suspect early hubs don't have an O ring - just the paper gasket.

It's a 1098 axle or maybe a 948 one. Either out of a normal 948 or a 1098 LCV.

BMC IS QUITE CORRECT IN SAYING THAT EARLIER HUBS DO NOT HAVE AN `O` RING, JUST THE PAPER GASKET

I think it's prior to 1963, pretty sure Willie knows the exact dates so might be worth a PM.

Cheers,

Dan

Our Nov 1958 had the 'O' ring fitted when my mother bought the car in Jan 1965 with 40k miles on the clock. I wonder if they had been changed during the first 6 and a bit years?

The BMC manual just refers to 'later' cars, but is not specific to date or chassis number.

Now has Peter May's double bearing hubs, still with the 'O' ring, as enthusiastic track days do not go well with the original single bearings!

Are the hubs modified to take double bearings - or is it just two thin ones back to back ?

A lot of older cars have had the hubs with O ring retro fitted over time....

They are completely new hubs. Uses the original type bearing, then a new second (smaller) bearing behind, roughly where the oil seal was, and a new (different) oil seal behind that.

They fit quite easily - the oil leak capture ring that is spotwelded to the back plate is removed, and the brake shoes have to be drilled to move one of the return srpings outwards slightly to clear the new, larger o/d hub. Apart from that it's a straightforward remove and replace job.

Ok - interesting - thanks for that. Have never had rear bearing trubble - even with quite extensive rallying - and boat towing in my youth ! Your car looks great with the wide wheels - are they 13" ?
