Accelerator cable

Hi Guys,

I was so happy to be at the stage of having my engine back together, manifolds on, new water pumps, thermostats, alternator overhauled..it was all going so well.

Until I come to refit the throttle cable. For the life of me, something is just not right. It seems to rigged as per haynes manual cartoons and as I recall it came apart. But the inner cable does not want to move, on closer inspection, the ferrule at the carburettor end of the cable is missing (probably for years) so the end of the casing is pushed into the fitting. Would that make much difference? - and - How much inner cable should be pulled through? Does anyone have any better diagrams or photos of correctly rigged cable?

If the end of the cable is frayed it will stick in the outer sleeve. Un hook the cable from the accelerator pedal and take the cable out - pull the inner back and inspect it all. If frayed - new one needed - if not, oil it well and slide it all back together!

If you need a new one in a hurry a bicycle brake cable with a standard 'pear' nipple will do the trick.

Thanks guys, the inner cable itself is ok, not frayed. I think I have not rigged the connection up to the carb correctly. Are their any 'Murphy-isms' involved in rigging this?

Well - you need to pull the inner cable tight to pull the accelerator pedal up, before you fix the cable to the carb !

I find it a bit easier if you put a block of wood under the pedal.

you need to pull the inner cable tight to pull the accelerator pedal up, before you fix the cable to the carb !

Also check it has located correctly in the slotted hole in the pedal shaft. Sometimes it can grip the slot further up and potentially come loose at an awkward moment.

Aye - which is why I didn't suggest the block of wood (or brick as I have used in the past) - because the cable can then slip out of the fork all too easily ! In fact this may be what's happened here - but I didn't want to suggest it until we see if the pulling tight works !!

Very rarely - if it's a problem, use a wee bit of blu-tack to hold it in

Thanks again chaps, I will check it all again using your suggestions. Pedal up, something to hold it in place, then pull the cable tight through and tighten. Hook spring on last - Thank god I dont have to rig a choke cable..it never had one fitted!

Leave a wee bit of slack in the cable, or you won't be able to set a slow idle.
