Hi

Many thanks to the organisers of the London2Brighton Fun Run.

And to those folk who got oily trying to diagnose my 'wheel noise'.
Which sounded like a worn bearing and then like a loose spring... but examination revealed nothing much amiss. [This has been going on for a while now. Replaced the bearing and all was well for a while. Noise returned, took off wheel and replaced wheel and all was well again for a while. Attention seeking I thought!]

The Grrrrraunch - grrrrrrrrrrrrrraunchhhhh became rather loud on the way back and Cam Shaw [my convoy pal] decided the wheel had to come off again.

Wobbbbbbly wheel syndrome diagnosed by Dr Shaw.

The wheel bolt [no studs with wheel nuts on the Series MM] holes had got larger!

[Did you mention that this could happen Dr Mike Perry?]

Spare speedily attached and away we went without a peep from that wheel.

Will need to get another wheel soon. And, don't be tempted to use washers to fix the problem.

Will need to get another wheel soon. And, don't be tempted to use washers to fix the problem.
I've heard of washers being used as an interim solution - they need to be 'adjusted' into funnel shape to match the bolt head. Certainly they should not be a long term solution.

Is your 'don't use' comment related to using flat washers (flat washers would be dangerous)

Hi Ray. Actually I was quoting advice given by a parts supplier recommended by another member of the club. They didn't even go into detail about washer shapes. Just clearly advised against it. So, sorry I'm not very knowledgeable about it. Be interesting to get other ideas on it.

Sounds like the bolts had been alowed to become loose over a prolonged period of time (before you inherited the car Chrissie :oops: ). If left for too long the wheels could also develop cracks.

I've got an EX-Ray machine. It was a machine (engine) that used to belong to Ray. :lol: (sorry). :lol: Not much use I'm afraid.

Chrissie, if you need a spare MM wheel, then I could bring one along to the MM rally if you like. :D

It wasn't the split pin after all. glad you made it home.
You know my solution, bolts screwed from the inside of the drum, the heads cut off and the bolts peened over and welded inside the drum.
Believe it or not but Austin Maxi wheel nuts have the same thread as later MM wheel bolts and have 3/4 AF heads so they pull up nice and tight on the wheel. Not original true but who can see with the hub caps on.
Can't remember thread sizes but they changed at SMM126725 LHD & 131858 RHD.

Mike, I presume the Maxi nuts are slightly larger in diameter than than the MM ones? In other words they could still 'pull-up' an MM wheel that is too loose (through wear) for the MM wheel-bolts?

Mike,

Your solution is certainly a good way to prevent a car from loosing wheels. But I'm trying to keep my car as original as possibly.

I have read somewhere that the bolt type fittings of the MM series can be troublesome. The wheels can become loose on the retaining bolts even when they are fully tight.

An easy solution is to fit a 7/16 in mild steel washer 1/16 thick under the bolt head.

Does somebody has experience with this method? Is this type of washer, easy to get?

When the countersink of the wheel hasn't got the original format anymore, than replacing the wheel is the only solution. Does somebody know if repair of the countersinks is possibly?

No problem, 1 wheel, the MM Rally, a few sheets of wet or dry, some masking tape, high build primer and Empire Green top coat, and we have an even happier Chrissie :lol:

I'm using this method on my car now. I didn't have a problem of loose wheels though, but I'm sure it wasn't too far away.
I'm not too sure on the actual washer size but it's nothing special.

I'd be inclined to weld the washers to the rim if you wanted to really repair the coutersunk areas. Check around the holes for cracks too.
